Salt spray cabinets were first used for corrosion testing around 1914, In 1939, the neutral salt spray test was incorporated as ASTM Method B 117, Today B 117 is the Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus under the jurisdiction of Committee G-l on Corrosion of Metals. This traditional salt spray specifies a continuous exposure to a fog of 5% salt solution at 35°C In some cases B 117 is useful for quality control testing, but in other cases it is not. During the course of 80 years of use, there have been many modifications to B 117. In spite of all these refinements, there has long been general agreement that salt-spray exposure results frequently correlate poorly with the corrosion seen in actual atmospheric exposures,
